Katsuhiko Takayama
Kendo 7th Dan Kyoshi
Since Joining the USYD Kendo club in 2010, Takayama Sensei has grown USYD Kendo club to be the biggest in Australia!
After graduating from Saitama University in Education, Takayama Sensei was a finalist in the All-Japan Universities tournament, and has experience coaching over 6 different kendo teams worldwide.

Takayama Sensei's methodological approach in coaching has proven success with students winning multiple championships spanning across, University Nationals and State Kendo Championships, Australian kendo championships, as well as top 3 and Top 8 results at the recent 2024 World Kendo Championships.​

Ervin Peng
Kendo 5th Dan
Starting Kendo at the USYD Kendo Club in 2007, Ervin Sensei has been instructing for over 15 years, with a strong focus on building structured and supportive beginner programs.
Blending traditional kendo principles with modern sports science and coaching methodology, he takes a holistic approach to development: refining technique, mindset, and physical foundation together. He has mentored students to achieve success at University Nationals, State Championships, Australian Kendo Championships, and most recently, the World Kendo Championships.

As founder of the Mortdale branch, Ervin Sensei is passionate about growing kendo in South Sydney, creating a safe and welcoming space where students can train hard, have fun, and strive for continual improvement.

Walter Chung
Kendo 5th Dan

Walter Sensei’s teaching focuses on the importance of mastering kihon (fundamentals), instilling in students the discipline and precision needed to excel in kendo.
Known for his thoughtful guidance and steady demeanour, Walter Sensei creates an environment where students feel supported in their growth, whether they are just beginning or striving to reach advanced levels.

Grazia Nguyen
Kendo 3rd Dan​

Representing at state and national levels, Grazia achieved equal 3rd at the 2025 Australian kendo championships.
Grazia takes an analytical approach and encourages students to think deeply, breaking techniques down step-by-step so improvements are clear and repeatable.
Through collaborative training, she supports students in reaching new levels of understanding and personal growth.

Iris Somera
Kendo 3rd Dan

As part of the Australian Team, Iris represented her country at the 2024 World Kendo championships and later, she achieved equal 3rd place at the 2025 Australian Kendo Championships.​

Her teaching style is dynamic, engaging and collaborative. she takes a "lets do it together" approach. Actively engaging with students, getting to know them personally, and creating an inclusive and supportive atmosphere in the dojo. Her energy and enthusiasm are contagious, motivating students to tackle new challenges with confidence.

Samantha Zhong
Kendo 3rd Dan​

A​t the 2024 World Kendo Championships, Sam represented Australia and achieved 3rd place in the Women’s Team event, later finishing Top 8 at the 2025 Australian Kendo Championships.
​
Her competitive record reflects a style that is composed, efficient, and built on uncompromising fundamentals.
In the dojo, Sam is known for her warm, easy-going personality and steady presence. She teaches with clarity and intention, drawing directly from her international and national experience to shape structured, purposeful guidance.

Joe Pile (Takatori)
Kendo 1st Dan
A Primary School teacher by trade, and a former National Kendo Champion,​ Joe's dedication and passion is reflected in his down to earth, friendly, engaging style of instructing, tailoring instructions for students.

He hopes to share his experience with students so that everyone can grow together and train together!
